How to win at Chinese Checkers
Stop measuring distance. Start building roads. Strong players turn their own pieces into a reusable jump network, then bring the last piece home before it is stranded.

1. Think in turns saved, not holes gained
A step advances one hole. A strong jump ladder can carry a piece over half the board in a single turn - then carry another piece on a later turn. The right question is not "How far did this piece move?" It is "How many future turns did this move remove?"
Before every move, ask
- Does this create a jump for another piece?
- Does it preserve a route for the piece farthest behind?
- Am I giving my opponent an even better route?
2. Build a ladder out of your starting triangle
Open the narrow tip, then space pieces along a diagonal toward the center. A piece sitting roughly one jump away from the next becomes infrastructure. A piece pushed forward alone becomes traffic.
The first eight plies below are the actual opening of the featured game. Step through them slowly and watch the empty holes: every jump both uses a bridge and creates a new one.

3. See landing points, not pieces
Beginners look at the piece being jumped. Strong players look at the empty hole beyond it. That landing hole determines whether the route continues, changes direction, or dies.
In the position below, the black piece does not travel in a straight line. It changes direction four times, using both colors as temporary bridges. The shape of the empty landing holes is the tactic.

Keep several pieces at jump spacing. The best bridge does double duty: it helps a leader now and a straggler later.

A quiet step can be powerful when it occupies a critical landing hole. Prefer blocks that also improve your own route.
4. Solve the last-piece problem early
The most common strategic collapse is sending nine pieces forward and leaving one at the tip of the starting triangle. The leaders look impressive; the lonely final piece has nobody left to jump and spends turn after turn stepping.
After each move, find the piece farthest from the goal. Can it enter your ladder next turn? If not, your formation may already be borrowing speed from its own endgame.
A formation is only as fast as the route it leaves behind.
5. Fill the deepest goal holes first
The entrance to the destination triangle is easy to reach and easy to clog. If you fill those front holes too early, the pieces behind them lose their landing points. Use the open board to reach the deepest, awkward holes while you still can.
- Fill deep and awkward holes while long routes remain available.
- Do not seal the entrance with a piece that cannot move farther.
- Preserve one useful landing point for the final arrival.
- Count turns needed by the last piece, not pieces already home.
How strategy changes with more players
In two-player Chinese Checkers, every block has one target. On three-, four-, and six-player boards, the center can transform before your next turn. Another color may complete your ladder, occupy your landing, or move the bridge you expected to use.
Keep two plausible routes through the center and check turn order before relying on another player's piece. Pure blocking also loses value: spending a whole move to slow one opponent may simply gift tempo to everyone else.
Three drills that produce better moves
For ten turns, reject the move that advances farthest. Look for the move that creates the most future jumps.
After every move, point to your rear piece and name its next bridge. If you cannot, repair the route.
Find the first move where your formation split. Undo it and test three quieter alternatives.
